Netflix Is Paying Insane $100M To Keep "Friends" Through Next Year

As Chandler Bing might say, could Friends reruns be any more expensive?

After Netflix announced this week that it would be keeping the beloved sitcom throughout 2019, The New York Times now reports that the streaming platform is coughing up a whopping $100 million to WarnerMedia to do so.

That's an astronomical increase from the $30 million Netflix had been paying for the show's streaming rights.

Fans were previously warned that Friends could leave Netflix because AT&T, which owns WarnerMedia, is gearing up to launch its own streaming service in late 2019.

“That’s content we definitely want on our platform,” AT&T chief executive Randall Stephenson said Tuesday about Friends at an investor conference. “And clearly it’s important to Netflix as well.”

Stephenson added that Friends is likely to appear on AT&T’s service by 2020, although it's unclear if the sitcom would also be available on Netflix then.
