Plunge Pools Are A New Trend In Staycations

Because of the pandemic and staying at home, wanting to travel, and a new type of relationship with our homes, landscape designer Yardzen has found that more and more people want Plunge pools.

What is that, you ask? Cuz I asked that same question.

• A plunge pool is a smaller, svelter alternative to a traditional pool. Perfect for a dip or leisurely float, these small, deep pools can transform a compact backyard or outdoor space into a relaxing oasis without requiring a ton of space. 
• They can range in shape and size, and can be in-ground, above-ground, or semi-above-grade, but generally range between 200-400 square feet. Some designs opt for deeper water at 5-7 feet, and some are wading depth at 3-4 feet, and in general, they have a flat bottom versus the sloped bottom of a traditional pool.

Why are they popular?

• Less expensive and easier to maintain than standard-size pools, plunge pools’ popularity has risen not only for practical reasons, but because they’re stylish, require less water and are space-saving. For those in urban areas with limited outdoor space or in neighborhoods with smaller lot sizes, we’ve seen an uptick in plunge pools because they make the most of limited space. Aesthetically, they also can feel more modern and polished, giving you the look of a swanky spa or hip boutique hotel in your own backyard. 
• As far as maintenance goes, they also require less upkeep – it takes less energy to heat them (if you opt to), fewer chemicals to treat them, and less water to fill them. With a smaller surface area, they’re also easier to clean.
• If you live in a seasonal climate, there are some pre-fab options out there that can act both as a cold water pool in the summer and hot tub in the winter, giving you more year round use.

Features

• Some plunge pools are prefabricated and essentially dropped into your backyard. Others can be custom-built like a traditional pool.
• You still have options for lots of customization and add-ons like custom seating, water features, lights, heating elements, etc. (just keep in mind, that that will increase your costs).
