Devonte Hart, the teary-eyed boy who hugged a police officer during a Ferguson-related rally in Portland in 2014 is feared dead after his family’s SUV plunged off a California cliff. Police believe Jennifer and Sarah Hart were traveling with their 6 adopted children when their SUV drove off the Pacific Coast Highway on Monday. The parents were found dead inside the SUV. Three of the children were ejected from the SUV. Authorities believe Devonte Hart and two other of his siblings were in the vehicle and also died but a search of the surrounding ocean has not turned up anything. Police say there are no skid marks but they don’t believe the crash was intentional.
Neighbors say there were some problems concerning the family. Reportedly Devonte would ask neighbors for food claiming his parents withheld food as punishment. Apparently the state’s Department of Social and Health Services had been trying to make contact with the family in recent days.
