Shark Week Explained: 2018 Schedule & Celebrity Appearances

Galeophobes, beware: Shark Week is underway!

Shark Week is an annual, week-long series of shark-centric programming that's been broadcasting on the Discovery Channel since 1988. Doing the honors of hosting this year's 30th anniversary is none other than Shaquille O'Neal, who took the first plunge on Shaq Does Shark Week during the ceremonial kickoff on Sunday (July 22).

And the legendary baller isn't the only A-lister to make a splash during Shark Week 2018, either. Last night, professional mixed martial artist Ronda Rousey dived into shark-infested waters in Ronda Rousey Uncaged and British explorer Bear Grylls confronted tiger sharks and bull sharks in Bear vs. Shark. Still to come, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Olympic medalist Lindsey Vonn, and New England Patroits tight end Rob Gronkowski will each face the beast of the deep blue sea on Monster Tag later on tonight (July 23).

But before you go dipping into the waters, here's what you should know to avoid becoming shark bait this summer. Per SafeWise, only six shark-related fatalities have been confirmed in the last decade. The majority of attacks occur in Florida and Hawaii, and the great white, tiger and bull sharks are liable for the most human attacks. Yet, an average of 45 shark attacks transpires in the United States each year — considering the odds of among 320 million people here, your chances of being bitten are still slim.

Although the eight-day marine marathon has already begun, there's still a fin-tastic lineup of toothy television ahead that will soothe even the most ravenous shark lover's appetite. From Guy Fieri’s Feeding Frenzy and Cash Cab Shark Week Edition to Bloodline: Spawn of Jaws and Naked and Afraid of Sharks — grab some munchies, kick back, and brace yourself for the big chomp!
